Earlier today, Microsoft officially announced that Microsoft Office is now available for use on the iPad. The IT Department thought we might post some points of information for anyone in our district who is considering the use of these apps on their personal devices.
We know that there are a number of students and staff who use Office on their personal devices. In reading the announcement, the IT Department staff noted that for this product to be fully functional, a user will need an Office 365 account. The annual cost for a personal Office 365 subscription ranges anywhere from $80 to $100 per year.
The IT Department is currently exploring low cost options for Office 365 accounts for our staff and students. We expect that this process might take another couple of weeks. Therefore, if you’re interested in a 365 account for personal use, you may wish to consider holding off on your purchase. Once we know the outcome of our inquiries, we’ll be sure to post an update to the blog.
A while back, we announced a very low-cost option for staff to purchase the full version of Microsoft Office. This offer is still active, and allows the download of a full version of the software to a personal computer. However, the current offer for staff DOES NOT include an Office 365 subscription.
It is important to note that, as the announcement was only made today, we haven’t yet explored the possibility or implications of deploying this software on district-owned iPads. We will be looking at that in the coming weeks.
